Looking Back on 2017

2017 was quite a year for me. I just went all in on Flower Gift Korea a month before the year started, after running an Engish Gyosoopso located in Seoul with my wife for close to four years. Even though my flower business technically started in April 2016, it was just a side business at the time.
Looking back, it was a little risky to leave a business that allowed me to make a living, but my wife and I both knew that once February hit, we would see a spike in sales, which was actually the case. From February on, our sales month to month were good enough to help us keep enough money to survive, save some money, and help chip away at our loans.

1. Establish my trade business by registering it as a legal business and become part of some trade organizations in Korea: The good news is that I was able to register my trade business. It cost me nothing, except for the transportation fee to get myself to the tax office in Gangnam. So I am the owner of Smart Trade Korea. Congratulations to myself! I have made literally 0 won so far from this business, so there isn’t much to celebrate. But it is something. Unfortunately, I did not become part of some trade organizations yet. I plan on becoming a member of KOTRA and maybe a few others as there are some perks to becoming a member. Honestly, I put my trade business to

1. Improve my Korean by learning more advanced business vocabulary before I start my Trade academy course on November 20th: I probably studied pretty hard for like a week and then just did some studying here and there. The crazy thing was that I understood the Korean lectures a lot better than expected. My Korean is better than I thought, I guess that goes for all people when they think of their language skills. And like always, I always got ahead of myself and said that I would read such and such, when in fact I didn’t. Well, as they say, shoot for the moon and you’ll be amongst the stars.

1. Get ahead of my blog post schedule for Flower Gift Korea and Entrepreneur Korea (I’m currently behind): I get a big F for this goal. I didn’t get ahead in my blog posts, if anything, I got pushed even further behind. But for good reason, I was either relaxing or working extra hours to keep up with the orders we were receiving. But yah, I definitely should do more content creation for my websites/blogs.
2. Find more social media apps/streams to create accounts to build awareness for Flower Gift Korea: I was able to create new accounts on some new social media apps and I’m unsure if that is helping. One of them is a popular social media for people in Russia, one is Myspace, which

Random Thoughts: Delivering in Korea Part 1

If you order a box of chocolates at 7am from Flower Gift Korea today in Seoul, it is possible for that box of chocolates to get all the way to Busan the very next day. Google shows me that it is 325 kilometers from Seoul to Busan, which is quite a distance. Actually, that same box of chocolates can travel from one end of Korea to the other end of Korea by the very next day if you send out your order before 1pm. And it will roughly make it 99 out of 100 times within one day, as long as there aren’t holidays or Sundays included.
What’s so amazing about that? Other countries can ship packages 325 kilometers away the very next day as well. Well, they probably can, but how much does it cost?
Well, let’s just use the US as an example. From New York to Philadelphia, it is

Chuseok Is Way Too Long For Some of Us Business Owners

Chuseok is Korean Thanksgiving and for the year 2017  most people get literally 10 days off! Like amazing right?! Well, if you were to ask me in 2011, then I would say, “Best thing ever! I get paid vacation and I can visit another country!” Well, that’s when I was working for a public school teaching as a Native English teacher in Seoul, South Korea. But what about now? Nope, not for me, not anymore. I rather it just be normal working days.
I no longer am an employee of a company, but I do believe employees of businesses do deserve a break, but 10 days off for most companies is not really a good thing for the Korean economy. It only benefits the places where people go during Chuseok and if anything, a lot of the small businesses suffer.

September Goals Results

1. Continue to build my network: New networking efforts online and 2 or 3 networking events: I actually didn’t do much networking this month. However, I have interviewed a few people for the Entrepreneur Korea Podcast, which allowed me to meet some new people and connect with other entrepreneurs in Korea.
2. Create order/delivery checklists for Flower Gift Korea: I absolutely forgot that I was planning on doing this. Other things must have come up and I just put it on the back burner and didn’t get to it.
3. Upload new products to Flower Gift Korea and upgrade product photos: I only changed a few of the product photos, but most of the products I currently have don’t really need updating.
4. Reach $11,000 US in sales (Pass
